Well, I've been saying for months that this fandom was going to kill my computer, with all the downloading and etc, and I don't know whether or not that's actually what did it but my computer is definitely dead.

It's juuuuust old enough to be outside the warranty so I'm going to have to take it somewhere to see if it can be repaired but I don't have a clue what's wrong with it. It rebooted on its own, but to a blue screen that says drive error, restart in safe mode, and then when I try to start in safe mode it gives me a looooong list of system file names, and the the drive error, restart in safe mode message again. And again. Andagainandagainandagain.

I'm surprisingly calm about this overall, although the thought of losing all those photos I've taken with my digital camera in the past year or so is kind of tough and I'm going to seriously mourn the lost story files if I can't get them back. But I called my mom last night to tell her what happened and she said, well, take my computer, I don't do anything but play Solitaire on it anyway. Probably I'll borrow it until tax time and then buy a new one, see if I can get my files off the old one.

But anyone who wants to send me mixed CDs and footage, please, do be my guest. *G* I've got hundreds of files to replace and I am on the very slowest dial up ever! Or if you've got story files...like, I'm hoping one of my beta-type people hasn't deleted a version of Cake that had the Grammys scene, or the golf thing I started, or whatever. If you do, let me know.

This is the second time since I joined this fandom that I've had a computer loss, man. Uncool. Hmph.

It does indeed sound like the kind of error you could get if the harddisk is too full, especially if you haven't defragmented in a while. If the OS won't boot there are a still a number of different possible ways of getting at the files and creating some space, but I can't tell you which one might work for your machine long-distance, I'm afraid. There's a good chance that could fix the whole problem.

Even if it's really broken, a repair shop or friendly neighbourhood geek might be able to plug the hard disk into another machine as a secondary disk and get at the files that way.

Noooo - your computer, noooo. I haven't found the golf story yet, but I'm SURE I must have it.

I do have - not 1, not 3, but SIX drafts of cake, including two with a section that starts: 'Before the Grammys...' See - my squirreling! It is not anal and obsessive. It's useful!

Also, I heart you desperately. That is all.
