So last night I made a huge error. I was in the kitchen trying to use both the toaster and the microwave at the same time and blew a fuse...in the living room.

Yes.

I did something similar a couple times last year. I had my air conditioner on and tried to blowdry my hair, and then I tried to run both the washing machine and the vaccum at the same time. No go! The wiring in this place has to be ancient. See: reasons why Alison is moving out of her apartment asap even though it's cute and she likes it.

Anyway, the fuses are in the cellar. Getting into the cellar requires sweeping cobwebs off the door, waiting to see if any spiders run away, sweeping the spiders down the stairs, sweeping cobwebs off the ceiling and away from the walls, turning your back to the big huge dark damp cellar which has lots of strange little nooks where serial killers could totally be lying in wait, and flipping little switches that seem determined to stay on the 'off' side, then sweeping your way back up the stairs. All without shrieking like a banshee or bursting into totally girly tears of EWWWW!!!

Doing it at NIGHT in the DARK with only the one dim cellar lightbulb between me and being plunged into a big black room full of lurking spiders and serial killers? NO WAY.

So, I took my laptop, realized that I didn't have an internet connection, and decided to watch Dr. Who (just one episode! or two. or four. bedtime? what bedtime?) until, um, 1 am.

This morning I got my broom and trekked down into the depths of the cellar with a minimum of whimpering, and did NOT look around because that is just an invitation for trouble. I flipped the switch until it stuck, and then dashed up two flights of stairs to my apartment. I was already stripping by the time I'd hit my door and headed IMMEDIATELY into the shower.

Then I calmly sat down at the computer in the living room and paid my [livejournal.com profile] vividcon registration, and the world immediately seemed sunny and new again. Hurray for surviving the cellar! Hurray for coming off the VVC waitlist so I can actually attend the con and not just stalk the cool people!

And seriously, hurray for a good broom. *grins*
